What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness has become something of a buzzword in recent years. It is often offered as a panacea for all ills. It has become so popular that you can find many courses that teach mindfulness without giving an understanding of how it is applied to real life. This means it can become confused with a relaxation exercise, and is misused with the best of intensions, and people end up feeling that it is simply not working.

When I discuss mindfulness with clients, I define it as:

“Consciously bringing awareness to your here-and-now experience with openness, interest and receptiveness.”

How can Mindfulness Help You?

There are many facets to mindfulness, including living in the present moment, and engaging fully in what you are doing rather than getting stuck in your issues, or hooked by your feelings and thoughts. All too often people can spend their time worrying and over-analysing situations and focussing on potential outcomes, which can in fact allow the most important aspects of day to day life to slip away from them.

Applied mindfulness can provide the opportunity to free your feelings to simply exist, letting them come and go rather than trying to control them. When we observe our private experiences with openness and receptiveness, even the most painful thoughts, feelings, sensations and memories can seem less threatening and unbearable.
